Prospective postgraduate students may be eligible to receive new Government-backed loans to help fund their studies from September 2016. A new student loan system will be introduced from the start of the 2016/17 academic year to support Masters-level study for people up to the age of 60.The changes to postgraduate support were announced as part of Chancellor George Osborne’s Autumn Statement and Spending Review in November 2015.
Those eligible for postgraduate student loans may be able to borrow up to £10,000 through the Student Loans Company. Previously postgraduate students could not receive loans from the SLC. The loans will be available for both taught and research Masters programmes. Elly Sample, Director of Communications, Development and Marketing at the University of Lincoln, said: “Postgraduate study is an excellent way to deepen your understanding of your chosen subject and open up new career opportunities.
“The benefits of postgraduate study for individuals and society have been well-documented: from the ‘postgraduate premium’ in lifetime earning potential to meeting the demand for high-level skills the UK economy needs.
“We are delighted that a new postgraduate funding system has been put in place to help support even more people take this valuable next step in their academic career.”
