Lincoln mathematician honoured for contribution to international research collaborations

A mathematician from the University of Lincoln, UK, has been honoured in Brazil for his significant contribution to international research collaborations.
Dr Evgeny Khukhro from Lincoln’s School of Mathematics and Physics was awarded the title of Professor Honoris Causa at the University of Brasilia (Honorary Professor) in recognition of his work to further research in the fields of group theory and algebra.
Dr Khukhro, who is Programme Leader for Mathematics at Lincoln, was invited to visit the university in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, where a ceremony was held on Monday 3rd July to celebrate his career and officially present him with his award. The title of Professor Honoris Causa is granted by the University of Brasilia to professors or illustrious scientists who have provided important services to its academic community and the wider research environment.
The ceremony began with the British and Brazilian national anthems, and included talks by Dr Emerson de Melo on behalf of the Department for Mathematics at the University of Brasilia and by Dr Khukhro, who described some of the ongoing research collaborations by mathematicians in Lincoln and Brazil.
A major research project led by Dr Khukhro and Professor Pavel Shumyatsky at the University of Brasilia is funded by a CNPq-Brazil research grant through the Brazilian Scientific Mobility Program “Ciências sem Fronteiras” (Science without Borders). The project examines questions about length parameters of finite groups and Engel-type subgroups, and the researchers have produced 11 academic papers on their findings since 2014.
Dr Khukhro said: “It is an honour to receive this title from the University of Brasilia, where I have enjoyed working on various aspects of different research projects with a number of leading mathematicians over recent years. Mathematics can be communicated through written correspondence from opposite sides of the world, but working together in the same environment is so much more enjoyable, productive and beneficial. Opportunities like this to collaborate internationally are extremely valuable as they enable us to progress important areas of study and I look forward to continuing my work with Brazilian colleagues in the future.”
The University of Brasilia is one of the leading higher education institutions in South America and the University of Lincoln’s School of Mathematics and Physics has established a strong relationship with its Department of Mathematics. Brazilian colleagues recently attended Lincoln’s first mathematical conference on algebra, and on one of his overseas visits Dr Khukhro presented a lecture on George Boole – the 19th century mathematics revolutionary who was born in Lincoln and is recognised today as the forefather of the information age.
