Member of Award-Winning ‘Assemble’ Collective to Deliver Inspiring Talk as Part of Frequency 2017

James Binning, a member of the Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble, will deliver an illustrated talk at the University of Lincoln this month as part of the city’s biennial festival of digital culture, Frequency 2017.

The architecture collective will premiere the first phase of its latest project, LOG BOOK, as part of the festival which gets underway this Friday (20th October 2017).

Frequency is brought to Lincoln through an established relationship between Threshold Studios, an artist-led creative media and visual arts organisation specialising in the production of digital, moving image and public realm works; the University of Lincoln, Lincoln BIG, Visit Lincoln and Lincolnshire One Venues, alongside many other organisations and businesses across the city.

Throughout the ten-day programme of events, skilled woodworkers will work in concert within the Chapter House of Lincoln Cathedral to process a pile of logs – from their round, felled form into regular, sections of timber, ready for building. The preparation of the timber will be carefully staged, creating a dramatic tableau resonating within the 13th century Chapter House, itself constructed of materials created in a similar way.

The LOG BOOK installation seeks to reconnect British people with the nationÿs woodlands and with the lives and skills of those who work in them. It has been commissioned on the 800th Anniversary of The Charter of the Forest, a companion document to Magna Carta, to celebrate the launch of a new Charter for Trees, Woods and People, led by the Woodland Trust. The new charter will be displayed alongside Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest at Lincoln Castle from Monday 6th November.

James will talk about the project and the wider work of Assemble in his free-to-attend illustrated talk, which will take place at 7pm on Wednesday 25th October at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre on the University of Lincoln’s Brayford Pool campus.
