Staff and Students Showcase Creative Work at Prestigious Independent Short Film Festival

Staff and students from the University of Lincoln, UK, have showcased their creative work as part of the prestigious Aesthetica Short Film Festival.

The BAFTA recognised festival is a celebration of independent film from around the world, and an outlet for supporting and championing filmmaking. It is hosted in a variety of venues across the city of York, and ran from Wednesday 8th to Sunday 12th November this year.

The Special Showcase Screenings provide audiences with an opportunity to view some of the best works being produced by emerging filmmakers and this year included the work of staff and students from the University’s Lincoln School of Film and Media.

The screening, entitled ‘The Challenges of Originality’, revealed a diverse range of output from historical reconstruction to experimental film production and the combined discussion addressed the need to keep up to date with industry developments in the context of universities, including the challenges of originality and new routes for commissioning and distribution.

It was hosted by Chris Hainstock, Senior Lecturer in Media and Audio Production at University of Lincoln, a film editor who has accrued an impressive 24 years of experience at the BBC working across drama, documentaries and music programmes.

Speaking after the screening, Chris said: “The variety of work displayed in the University’s showcase was designed to illustrate how practice work feeds into our teaching at Lincoln and how our students become involved in often very key roles within these productions. Interestingly one of the most popular films was ‘Emporium’, a documentary directed by postgraduate student, Joshua Yerbury Brown.”

Professor Steven Peacock, Head of the Lincoln School of Film and Media, added: “I am enormously proud of Lincoln School of Film and Media’s showcase of staff and student work at this year’s BAFTA-recognised Aesthetica Short Film Festival. This achievement is emblematic of the abundant creativity, innovation and talent in the School of academics and students alike.”

The University of Lincoln’s showcase included the following works:

• City – written and directed by Dr Mikey Murray and starring David Hayman
• Wordless – filmed and created by Tony Richards, with audio design and music by David McSherry
• The Empty Throne – directed by Philip Stevens, produced by Dominique Webb and sound design by Chris Hainstock
• The Last Viking – cinematography by Stewart MacGregor, sound by Lee Gretton and colour grading by Jon Holmes
• Emporium – directed by Joshua Yerbury Brown
