The ongoing partnership between Lincoln City Football Club and the University of Lincoln is continuing to flourish as the University becomes the team’s front of shirt sponsor for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.
To mark its support for the club, from Saturday 29 January 2022, the University of Lincoln will feature front and centre on “the Imps’” shirts as they take on Burton Albion at LNER Stadium.
In recent years, Lincoln City FC has benefited from the academic expertise and facilities at the University, and in turn, students have been afforded a variety of opportunities on account of the enterprising relationship. These range from gaining real-life experience – providing and practising expertise at the club, from performance analysis and coaching, sports therapy and massage, to learning about and practising the business of professional sport.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, Professor Neal Juster, said: “I’m proud of the University’s association with Lincoln City Football Club and we’re committed to seeing it flourish even more in the years to come. Both organisations are such important influences within the region and there is a shared sense of responsibility to our community – this will be a key focus going forward.
“The University being represented on the club’s shirt signifies just how successful our partnership continues to be. Not only does the club benefit from the University’s expertise and facilities, but our students are also afforded amazing opportunities to gain experience in a professional sports environment, many of whom have gone on to work for the club itself after graduating.”
The Imps have long been advocates of student talent, with Lincoln graduates working in a variety of roles at the club, including in sport science, marketing and project management.
Jake Longworth, Head of Communications for Lincoln City FC, studied on the BA (Hons) Sports Business Management programme at the University’s Lincoln International Business School before securing his role at the club.
Jake said, “It’s brilliant to see the football club extend their partnership with the University of Lincoln which connects two major pillars in our local community.
“Both organisations have played a huge role in my career and it’s amazing to see the University branding on the front of our home shirt.
“The skills and knowledge I learnt at the University significantly helped my transition into full time work as Head of Communications at Lincoln City FC and I’m loving every minute of it.”
Alumnus Daniel Horton, a 2021 graduate from the University’s BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning in Sport programme – secured a top role with the Imps after completing a considerable amount of practice experience at the club.
Daniel explained: “The full-time placement at Lincoln City FC gave me lots of valuable experience of working in the sports industry.
“The partnership between Lincoln City FC and the University has opened up some fantastic career opportunities and I’m really pleased to be employed full-time as the Lead Academy Sport Scientist at the club, alongside studying for my Master’s degree in MSc Sport Science here at the University.”
The University of Lincoln community has been celebrating the news with staff and students taking part in a ‘shirt reveal’ on the University’s social channels – twitter.com/unilincoln. In addition, gaming enthusiasts can also see the University featured on the team’s shirts in the hit video game FIFA 2022.
