International Day of the Midwife will again this year celebrate the profession and the work that midwives do to support families.

International Day of the Midwife will again this year celebrate the profession and the work that midwives do to support families.

On Thursday 5 May, the University of Lincoln, UK, will be welcoming students, guest speakers and the public onto campus to celebrate International Day of the Midwife.

Attending the event will be, Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent OBE, National Chief Midwifery Officer and National Maternity Safety Champion, as well as, Dr Jacqueline Williams, Senior Midwifery Adviser (Education) and Professional Practice Directorate NMC.

Kizzy Lynch, Lead Midwife for Education and Senior Lecturer at University of Lincoln said: “As a Midwifery team we are extremely proud to be in our third year of a fantastically successful midwifery programme at the University of Lincoln.

“With each year the programme is going from strength to strength, and we are delighted to be adding to a workforce of strong, confident and caring midwives.

“International Day of the Midwife is a day to celebrate our profession and the families we care for. IDM highlights the vital role midwives have in the health of women and families.

“Coming together on a day like this, as clinicians, families, students and educators enables us to reflect and celebrate the work we do and the amazing people we do it for.”

Hosted on Lincoln’s Brayford Pool campus, the event will be highlighting key issues and offer people an insight into the profession, including ‘midwifery through the ages’, where current students will be talking about how midwifery has evolved.

National Chief Midwifery Officer, Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent OBE will also be presenting the ‘Chief Midwifery Officer Silver Award’ to clinicians nominated by the midwifery team and their supported trust. In addition, there will be a discussion on the Continuity of Carer- a model of care associated with improved outcomes and increased satisfaction through the antenatal, birth and postnatal period.

The event is also celebrating the launch of the first midwifery society led by current University of Lincoln students.

Second year midwifery student and president of the society at University of Lincoln, Philippa Mesley said: “I’m in my second year of studying Midwifery at Lincoln and started up the society earlier on this year with an amazing group of second years.

“Our aim for the Lincoln Midwifery Society is to help support students alongside the course, as well as doing little bits to help in the community, like our recent collection for the EDAN Lincs Charity, who support those coping with domestic abuse in Lincolnshire.

“As a new society, we are really excited for the International Day of the Midwife, as this is not only a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the day properly but is also where we will be officially launching the society.”

The event will be taking place on Thursday 5 May from 11am – 3pm and is free to attend. Spaces are limited so please email klynch@lincoln.ac.uk to register your interest.
