Professor Anna Marie Roos is to receive a prestigious honour from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries.

Anna Marie, who is a Professor of the History of Science and Medicine at the University of Lincoln, UK has been invited to give the annual Gideon de Laune lecture later this month.

The Gideon de Laune lecture has been delivered annually for over 60 years and Anna Marie has been asked to give this year’s at Apothecaries’ Hall in London

Titled Before Newton: 17th-century chymical practice at Trinity College, Cambridge, the lecture will see Anna Marie discuss and characterise what chymical practice was like in Cambridge during the 1600’s, and why it would go on to become a subject of intense interest to Sir Isaac Newton as a student.

Following the lecture, Anna Marie will also be presented with a medal by the Society in recognition of her work.

Reflecting on the award, Anna Marie said “It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to give the Gideon de Laune Lecture and receive a medal from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London. The lecture is named in honour of the Royal Apothecary who was largely responsible for the grant in 1617 of a Royal Charter to the Apothecaries, making them an independent City Livery Company.

“The lecture is given to the faculty of the history of medicine and pharmacy at the Society and concerns a topic in those areas of the lecturer’s choice. The Gideon de Laune Lectures have been given annually since 1960, so it is wonderful to be part of that tradition of scholarship.”
