The University of Lincoln, UK, will reinstate its series of free public lectures, commencing with the Brian Winston Memorial lecture on Friday 10 November 2023, with guest speaker Michael Cockerell.

Professor Brian Winston is posthumously remembered as a leading British journalist and academic, documentary studies pioneer, and advocate for freedom of speech. He received international prestige for his writings, which defined the field of documentary-making. In 1985, he was also the recipient of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement Writing. During his time as a University of Lincoln academic, he was named the Lincoln Professor – the highest academic honour at the institution.

The University’s longstanding public lectures have provided its community of students, staff and public with an opportunity to connect with an array of inspirational minds from the worlds of business, sport, politics, science and the arts. A new line up for 2024 will be announced soon.

Award-winning documentary maker and BBC TV political reporter, Michael Cockerell, will be delivering a lecture, “Prime Ministers and TV – the Love-Hate Relationship”. He will share highlights from his 50-year career, including winning a string of awards for his witty and eye-opening profiles of the UK’s prime ministers and politicians. Michael is a regular radio broadcaster and writes for the Times, Daily Mail, the Guardian, and the Spectator.

Michael will reveal the inside story of the battle for control between prime ministers and the broadcasters, detailing how the two sides have become increasingly savvy and sophisticated – with each accusing the other of using unscrupulous tactics and disseminating fake news.

Michael will also show how Winston Churchill’s successors, from Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair to David Cameron and Boris Johnson, spent their careers refining their public image and performance.

The event will be held in the Isaac Newton Building lecture theatre and will start at 6.30pm on Friday 10 November 2023.
