Julie Spencer, Head of Wellbeing at the University of Lincoln, UK, has been named in the New Years’ Honours list for her services to education.

Julie has been awarded an MBE for being a constant champion of students and for her support of their physical and mental wellbeing.

The honours system recognises achievements in public life and people who have committed themselves to serving and helping the UK.

Julie and her team have been responsible for sector leading projects to support students before they join the University and beyond their stay at Lincoln. These have included the commissioning of a full-time dedicated University Police officer, and a Sexual Violence Liaison Officer working within student wellbeing. Julie has also worked with regional partners and teams across the University including Lincoln Students’ Union to pro-actively tackle drink spiking, and her work in this area has been replicated across the country at other universities.

Julie Spencer said upon receiving an MBE: “I feel very humbled and surprised. Not entirely sure it’s sunk in yet. However, it is an honour and a privilege to be recognised.

“I am incredibly passionate about my career but couldn’t do any of this without the inspiring support from my managers and the hard work and dedication of the team at Student Wellbeing who always go above and beyond showing amazing levels of compassion.

“The work can be challenging and demanding, but very rewarding, I feel it’s essential our students receive the best possible support. I have great opportunities to work alongside some very talented and determined people from not only the University but also our partners across the community who support my ideas.

“I just feel very proud and want to say a heartfelt thank you.”

Prof Neal Juster, Vice Chancellor at the University of Lincoln, said: “I congratulate Julie on receiving an MBE, it is richly deserved. We see every day at the University how tirelessly Julie works with her team so that students at Lincoln are supported.

“Julie carries out her work with incredible compassion and she has led projects which have influenced the whole sector to further support students’ wellbeing across the country.”
