250 staff and students have signed up to run the Lincoln 10K 2024 as part of the University’s Corporate Challenge team and even more will be volunteering or providing services at the event.

The University of Lincoln, UK will be sponsoring the Corporate Challenge for the second year; a race within the race that gives runners the opportunity to work collectively to cross the line in the quickest combined time, uniting workplaces and encouraging teambuilding.

This year, the University will go a step further to embed students into one of the largest and most-loved events in Lincolnshire. Sports Therapy students from the School of Sport and Exercise Science will be providing sports massages after the race which will contribute to their required clinic hours. This initiative will grant them practical experience at a largescale event servicing a range of both high-level and beginner runners.

Steven Rands, Senior Lecturer in Sports Therapy / Programme Leader, said: “Our students are required to complete a minimum of 200 hours of placement experience across their degree programme, and this offers an exceptional opportunity to provide recovery support to the runners of the event whilst gaining first-hand experience of supporting active members of the public.

“The students are very eager to put to practice the skills they have developed and used within our in-house sports massage clinic. By coming to our stall after the race, you not only gain the edge in recovering post-race, but you are also supporting in the key development of up-and-coming sports therapists of the future.”

For those keen to engage in the event without running themselves, the University has secured spaces for volunteers at the 5km cheer point, ensuring that anyone who wishes to be a part of the day can be present to encourage their colleagues or course mates.

Rosie Damarell, People Engagement & Wellbeing Manager at the University of Lincoln, said: “The Lincoln 10k is an incredible event that brings together the community to achieve a shared goal of crossing that finish line. This year, the University of Lincoln are the corporate challenge sponsor as we feel it is important to encourage engagement in an event that promotes physical and mental wellbeing, whilst raising vital funds for charity.

“Every year the Lincoln 10k brings together thousands of people and we are proud to be a part of that day.”

The University’s Corporate Challenge team will be raising money for local charity Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) who carry out life-saving work across the two counties.

LNAA Events Manager, Georgia Watson said: “We are incredibly grateful for the fantastic support from all the team at the University of Lincoln. As one of the leading Helicopter Emergency Medical Service charities in the UK, we constantly challenge ourselves to deliver the very highest level of pre-hospital critical care to our patients.

“This year we need to raise £10 million to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  We receive no direct funding from the Government, instead we rely on the wonderful generosity of individuals and groups like the University’s Corporate Challenge team to help fund our work and enable us to continue to be by the side of patients, day and night.”
