Associate Dean Appointed to Lead Lincoln’s New Medical School

Lincolnshire’s new medical school has appointed a leading medical education specialist as its first Associate Dean.

Professor Daniel McLaughlin joins the University of Lincoln, UK, from the School of Medical Education at Newcastle University, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience in medical education theory and practice.

He will lead the development of the University of Nottingham Lincoln Medical School, an exciting collaboration between the universities to offer first-class medical education in Lincolnshire. The first intake of undergraduate medical students in Lincoln will be September 2019 and in a few years’ time the School will deliver medical training to around 400 undergraduates.

Professor McLaughlin helped to establish the Graduate Entry Medicine course at the University in Nottingham, before going on to develop its Foundation Year for Medicine, a course which will also run at the Lincoln campus. He also played a pivotal role as Academic Director of Undergraduate Medicine at Durham University until the School was transferred to Newcastle University in August 2017.

Professor McLaughlin will be working alongside the new school’s Vice Dean Clinical Affairs, Professor Gill Pinner and Professor Alistair Warren, Vice Dean BMedSci, from the University of Nottingham, to ensure delivery of a high quality medical courses based entirely in Lincolnshire for the first time.

Professor McLaughlin said: “I feel honoured to have the opportunity to lead the development of the new medical school in Lincoln – a project that will have a major positive impact on the health and well-being of the people of Lincolnshire.

“I am excited at the prospect of building working relationships with colleagues at the University of Lincoln, the University of Nottingham and local health and social care institutions to create a medical degree programme that provides an excellent student learning experience, an inclusive and caring environment, and an even greater number of outstanding medical graduates for the National Health Service.”

The University of Lincoln and University of Nottingham confirmed in March 2018 they had been successful in their bid to establish a new medical school for Lincolnshire. It followed an announcement in 2016 by the now Secretary of State Jeremy Hunt of an additional 1,500 medical school training places across England.

The new appointment comes as plans continue to build a state-of-the-art facility at the University of Lincoln’s Brayford Pool campus. A major fundraising campaign has been launched to help raise funds towards the £21.1 million cost of the building, and local people and businesses are invited to help create this cutting-edge facility where the doctors of tomorrow will train.
