An ambitious new training programme to equip Royal Navy personnel with the skills and expertise they need to face future challenges will benefit from the academic expertise of the University of Lincoln, UK.

Lincoln has today been announced as the academic partner in a consortium led by Capita plc, which will transform and modernise the Royal Navy and Royal Marine’s shore-based training and provide the service with better qualified and more motivated and experienced personnel.

The new service will align with the Royal Navy’s wider transformation agenda and is also expected to increase efficiency in delivery, reducing redundant elements of current training and minimising time lost away from the frontline for service personnel. Capita will lead the transformation and delivery of the new education and training programme, working alongside the University of Lincoln, Fujitsu, Elbit, Raytheon and other specialist partners.

The University will support initial officer training from April 2021 and deliver courses in maritime-related studies and social work, as well as accrediting modules in music. The contract is one of the University’s most significant educational partnerships with industry to date.

Former Major General Julian Free CBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Lincoln, said: “Based in the Bomber County of Lincolnshire, the University is proud to offer educational services to the military and we look forward to sharing our expertise working alongside the Royal Navy.

“We have been successfully delivering innovative work-based distanced learning programmes for a number of years, with curricula designed to fit around the busy schedule of Armed Forces personnel. Our experience with these programmes means we are well placed to deliver further specialist training to officers of the Royal Navy in a flexible way.”

Jon Lewis, Capita’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We look forward to working with the consortium of world-class partners that Capita has brought together and the Royal Navy to transform, modernise and create better outcomes for the training service.”
