Dr Phil Hammond Prescribes a Good Talking To

Doctor Phil Hammond is prescribing a good talking to for students at the University of Lincoln when it was announced today that he will be joining an impressive line-up of prestigious speakers at the top 20 University in the New Year.

The latest speakers have been announced for a series of free lectures which connect audiences with leading lights from the worlds of business, sport, politics, science and the arts.

A qualified doctor and former GP, Dr Phil Hammond has been Private Eye’s medical correspondent for more than 25 years and has campaigned for patient empowerment, open data in healthcare and transparency in the NHS.

Hammond has presented five series of Trust Me, I’m a Doctor on BBC2 and has regularly appeared on Have I Got News for You, The One Show and The News Quiz. He will discuss his wide-ranging career and campaigning in his talk on Tuesday 18th February 2020.

The Great Lives series is the University of Lincoln’s flagship programme of free-to-attend public and student talks which brings high profile names from a variety of professions onto the University campus to offer inspiration and insight into their lives and careers.  Previous Great Lives guest speakers have included the former Poet Laureate Dame Carol Ann Duffy, prolific crime writer Ann Cleeves, comedian Stewart Lee, previous Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, Actor John Hurt, and the UK’s most senior scientist Professor Sir Mark Walport.

Admission to Great Lives events is free but prior booking is essential.

The University of Lincoln has announced the first three Great Lives lectures of 2020. The line-up also includes a Lincoln graduate who has toured the world with the iconic Red Arrows aerobatics team, and the University of Lincoln Chancellor who leads a major health and social care organisation.

Having graduated from the University of Lincoln in 2002 with a degree in Journalism, Andrew Morton worked as a news reporter and editor across Yorkshire. In June 2013, he became the Public Relations Manager for the Red Arrows, supporting the team on numerous tours all over the world. He will discuss his career and time with the Red Arrows in the first Great Lives guest lecture of 2020, on Friday 24th January.

Chief Executive of the leading social care organisation Turning Point and one of the first people’s peers, Lord Victor Adebowale CBE has served as the University of Lincoln’s Chancellor since 2008.

Lord Victor has advised governments of all parties on employment, housing, poverty and public service reform and in 2009 was listed as one of the 25 most influential people in housing policy over the past 25 years. His talk on Friday 7th February 2020 will detail his work and life, including his time as a cross bench member of the House of Lords.
