A law professional who created a support platform for aspiring lawyers during her degree studies has received an award for her impact in the legal industry.
Megan Hulme, a first-class Law graduate of the University of Lincoln, UK, was one of 100 women in the UK to receive a Rising Star Award for her commitment in supporting young lawyers as part of a scheme set up by We Are the City to recognise women across a variety of professions.
Megan founded the ‘It’s All Hearsay’ account on Instagram to promote social mobility within the legal industry and give fellow students free information and advice on the formidable undertakings of becoming a lawyer, including training contract guidance, networking, and interview preparation.
Megan now works as an Associate at Mishcon de Reya LLP, a top 40 international law firm based in London with offices in Oxford, Cambridge, and Singapore and through its association with Karas So LLP in Hong Kong.
Speaking about her journey from an undergraduate law student to progressing to her role within a city law firm, said: “I started a training contract during the height of the pandemic – my first seat in construction litigation meant there wasn’t a great deal to work on. I started It’s All Hearsay to keep myself busy while also doing something worthwhile to give fellow law students access to free, helpful resources.
“Coming from a socially mobile background myself, I’m a huge advocate of showing people it doesn’t matter what background you come from as you can still achieve your dreams. I love helping people and It’s All Hearsay helps to bridge the gap between law students who have faced barriers or don’t have any connections in the industry.
“I loved my University of Lincoln experience and in the future, will be working with the University’s Careers and Employability team to roll out workshops for law students to brush up on key topics such as case assessment and interview skills.”
In addition to her support work, Megan currently acts as a mentor and supports 28 law students in the UK. Several of the mentees have also gained experience working on her platform, within various support roles. She is also nominated for the All About Law Lawfluencer Awards as a key legal influencer in 2023.
Megan will also be addressing the University’s 2023 graduating law cohort as a guest alumni speaker at the graduation ceremonies taking place in Lincoln Cathedral in September this year. She will share her insights on her journey into law and offer advice to newly graduated law students on how they can forge ahead in their law careers.
