Students’ Achievements Celebrated at Graduation Ceremony

Undergraduate and postgraduate students from across the University’s four academic colleges received their awards in two ceremonies on Wednesday 24th January 2018, with the degrees presented by Professor Mary Stuart, Vice Chancellor of the University.
Two Honorary awards were also made at the ceremonies: the first to Willi Meixner, Chief Executive Officer of the Power and Gas Division at global engineering giant Siemens AG. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering for his services to engineering and innovation in Lincolnshire, the UK and internationally.
Mr Meixner was instrumental in developing the partnership between Siemens and the University of Lincoln which led to the founding of the Lincoln School of Engineering – the first new facility of its type created in the UK for more than two decades.
An award of Honorary Doctor of Arts was presented to Reginald D Hunter, the American actor, writer and comedian who is well known in the UK through appearances on Have I Got News for You, BBC Radio 4’s The Unbelievable Truth, 8 Out of 10 Cats, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and QI.
Reginald has toured the UK extensively, entertaining a diverse audience from teenagers to grandparents. Achievements include being a finalist in the So You Think You’re Funny competition at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and a nomination for a Perrier Best Newcomer Award.
Professor Stuart said: “There can be a no more magnificent setting for a graduation ceremony than Lincoln Cathedral. It provides the perfect stage to celebrate our students’ achievements and we are delighted to have the opportunity to mark the occasion with so many of our students and their families.
“Our alumni remain members of the University of Lincoln’s community for life, wherever they travel to next. Through our alumni Network, they join a global family of tens of thousands of people from a vast variety of countries, backgrounds and professions.”
Head of the University’s Student Wellbeing Service, Julie Spencer, received the Vice Chancellor’s Excellence in Student Engagement Award. Under Julie’s leadership the Student Wellbeing Service won University awards for Best Achievement in Wellbeing in 2015 and 2017 and was voted Students’ Union Service Team of the Year award in 2016.
