A University of Lincoln student has won a prestigious 2024 Book Design Prize organised by world leading publisher, Thames & Hudson.

Sarah Goon, a BA (Hons) Graphic Design student at Lincoln, was selected for her creative and energetic illustrations for If I Had a Dinosaur by Gabby Dawnay and Alex Barrow. She impressed the judging panel, who praised her work for its “great energy, invention, and constantly moving in relation to the page itself”.

Reflecting on her achievement, Sarah said: “I chose to join the Thames & Hudson Book Design Award competition this past summer as something to pass the time, not really expecting anything to come out of it. It was a fun project that I really enjoyed doing as I had the creative freedom to take it in any direction I wanted. I looked for inspiration online, as well as from the original design of the book, and always knew I wanted to do some sort of illustration for the majority of the project.

I am currently studying Graphic Design at the University of Lincoln. The course and my lecturers have been really great – I have learned a lot and was able to use the skills I’ve gained to assist with my submission for this competition. Entering for this award has definitely given me more confidence in my creative abilities as a graphic designer.”

The competition, part of Thames & Hudson’s 75th anniversary celebrations, invited students from across the UK and Ireland to submit book designs in categories spanning art, history, photography, and children’s books.

Sarah will receive a certificate, design prizes and a monetary award at an award ceremony taking place at Thames & Hudson’s new London headquarters in spring this year.
